Signs It’s Time to Remove and Replace Your Old Flooring

You walk on your floors every day! Because you aren’t looking down all day, you probably aren’t thinking about what could go wrong until you can see it. That’s why it’s important to know what to look out for. However, when you wait long enough, repairs won’t do the trick and replacing your flooring will become the more viable option.

At our flooring store, our Denver-based flooring specialists recognize when floors are reaching the end of their lifespan. That said, let’s talk about signs that your flooring needs to be removed and replaced.

Visible Damage That Keeps Coming Back

Surface scratches and minor scuffs are part of daily wear. On the other side of things, damage that keeps coming back or problems deep enough to affect the floor’s structure is not. Common examples include:

  • Cracked or chipped tile
  • Gouges in hardwood
  • Tears in vinyl
  • Lifting laminate planks
  • Carpet fraying at the seams

If you notice any of these issues, your flooring materials need more than a little maintenance. Patching is a temporary fix, but if your floors keep failing in the same spot, they’re trying to tell you something.

Warping, Buckling or Soft Spots

When floors start lifting, buckling or feeling soft underfoot, they are reacting to moisture. Hardwood, laminate and even vinyl are vulnerable. Because no floor is 100% waterproof, when water gets underneath and penetrates the subfloor, boards swell, separate and warp in ways that can’t be reversed. Soft spots are the most obvious signs of subfloor damage and need to be addressed before installing new flooring. Moisture problems can’t fix themselves.

Persistent Odors That Don’t Go Away

Old carpet traps odors. In some cases, professional cleaning can’t get it out. Pet accidents, spills and years of use can affect the padding and subfloor over time. If your carpet still has a lingering odor after professional cleaning, it’s coming from somewhere the cleaning can’t reach. Flooring with visible mold or mildew can experience the same problem. That leaves replacement as the only option.

Wear That Can’t Be Fixed

Surface wear is fixable when you can refinish your flooring, solid hardwood is a prime example. However, there’s a limit on the number of times you can refinish and with most flooring types, this isn’t an option at all. Luxury Vinyl, laminate and engineered hardwood all reach a point where the wear layer is gone. With carpet, cleaning doesn’t solve every problem. Fading matting, permanent staining and a worn smooth surface texture are all signs that  replacement is inevitable.

Your Home Feels Harder to Keep Clean

As time passes, flooring becomes harder to maintain. Grout lines crack and eventually begin trapping dirt that won’t come out. Carpet holds allergens that a vacuum can’t fully pull up, while vinyl seams lift and collect debris underneath. If you’re constantly cleaning and your floors still feel dirty, your flooring is likely the problem.

It’s Been Long Enough

Even though flooring might look decent on the surface, there’s a point where it reaches the end of its practical lifespan. For example, carpet generally lasts 8-12 years in most Denver homes, while vinyl and laminate tend to provide 15-25 years of use. Tile and hardwood flooring can last even longer. If your flooring is pushing past those ranges, consider getting it checked out and replacing if problems keep coming up.
